John has been involved in the running industry since 1979 and has served in a variety of roles including race director, running event consultant, elite athlete coordinator, sports journalist, professional athlete manager, coach, corporate wellness consultant and athlete. He was named the 2006 Running Times and Road Race Management “Race Director of the Year”.
John is the CEO of Conley Sports Productions, LLC which used to own the Austin Marathon and Half Marathon®. He was the race director from 1998 to 2016. The Austin Marathon is the 23rd largest marathon footrace in the United States (MarathonGuide.com, 2010) and a member of Running USA.
He also previously served as the race director for the Nike Human Race-Austin in 2008 with 14,800 runners, the Texas Round-Up 5K & 10K with over 6,000 runners and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Houston, the largest running event in Texas with over 31,000 participants in 2009.
An active runner since 1971, John served as a Combat Medic in the US Army for nearly 10-years and competed on the All-US Army-Europe Cross Country Team in 1977. He was a collegiate runner at the NCAA Division-II level, earning all-academic honors in the South Atlantic Conference in 1979 while a student at Augusta State College. John has completed 17 marathons and over a thousand road races, track events and cross country races in the US and Internationally.
As a journalist, John covered the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, the US Olympic Marathon Team Trials, the USATF Olympic Track & Field Trials, the NCAA Track & Field Championships, and the US Olympic Festival, as well as numerous national and international competitions, including the Peachtree Road Race, the Honolulu Marathon, the New York City Marathon, the Chicago Marathon, The Pacifico-Mazatlan, Mexico Marathon, the Berlin Marathon, and the Moorea Tahiti Marathon, for a wide range of print and electronic media between 1991 and 2006, including Track & Field News, Running Times, Runner’s World Magazine and Runner’s World Radio, Runner-Triathlete News, and American Runner.
John served as a coach and manager for the USA National Team competing at the 2001 Chiba Ekiden Relay in Chiba, Japan. He was a Charter member of the Austin Sports Commission and currently sits on the Board of Directors of Running USA (www.runningusa.org) and the Special Events League of Texas (www.SELTX.com). He is a member of the Track & Field Writers of America and United States Track & Field (USATF). He was formerly the Executive Director of the Austin Marathon Foundation and a past-president of the Austin Runner’s Club.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree with Honors, from the Medical College of Georgia and a Master of Science degree from Georgia State University in Atlanta. John worked professionally as a Registered Nurse and Advanced Nurse Practitioner for 23 years in a variety of inpatient, outpatient, community health, research, academic and administrative settings, including four years as a corporate wellness manager at Motorola, Inc.
John was born in Tokyo, Japan, raised in Honolulu, Hawai’i and currently resides in Austin, Texas with his wife Stacey and two daughters, Akira and Aliyah. John was a contributing author in the textbook, “Child, Adolescent and Family Psychiatric Nursing”, the 1994 American Journal of Nursing’s “Book of the Year”.
